HOW TO TELL REAL COPPER

Pure copper is not magnetic. Most copper jewellery sold online is either plated (a thin layer of copper over a cheaper metal such as steel or brass), or alloyed with enough iron or nickel to make it appear magnetic. It's the quickest way to spot a fake.

The test is simple:

  • Take a fridge magnet
  • Hold it against your cuff, your ring or your necklace
  • If it sticks, even slightly, it isn't pure copper
  • If it doesn't stick, you're holding the real thing

Every piece I make is 99.9% pure copper, never plated, never alloyed with cheap metals. Test yours the day it arrives. If it ever fails, I will refund you immediately.

From the queens of Egypt to Roman soldiers, by way of Ayurvedic healers, copper has been worn against the skin for more than 3,000 years, long before pharmacies existed.

About Mabel Copper

Every piece in this collection begins with the same intention: to be worn by someone who wants to wear something real.

Copper has been worn against human skin for thousands of years: by the queens of Egypt, by Roman soldiers, by every generation of women who came before us. Worn quietly, every day, against the skin. This collection was born from that same obsession: pure copper, made the way it deserves to be made, and watching it bring people back year after year.

What began as a small collection became something we can only describe as a calling. Every detail matters: the weight, the finish, the purity. Because the women who wear these pieces deserve to know exactly what they are putting on their skin.

Every piece in this collection is shaped by hand, one at a time. We can only make so many, and once they are gone, they are gone.

My mother's hands

My mother lived to 96. She wore copper every day.

She never took it off. Not in the shower. Not to sleep. Not even on her wedding day.

We called it a superstition. She called it a tradition.

She grew up wearing copper jewellery every day, like her mother before her, and her mother's mother before that.

"You stopped wearing copper and began to wonder why everything feels harder."

I brushed it aside for years. Until the day I started looking at her, really looking, and realised she had lived differently from every other woman I knew.

She had what I believe modern women have lost: something she put on every morning that connected her to her mother, her grandmother and all the women who came before. A small daily ritual. Three thousand years old. No pills. No schedules. Nothing to remember.

Her copper bracelet is now on my wrist.

Too late to tell her she was right. But not too late for you.

Frequently asked questions

I've tried copper jewellery before and it didn't work. Why would this be different?

Almost certainly because what you were wearing before wasn't solid copper.

The vast majority of copper jewellery sold online is copper plated: a thin layer over a base metal, which means almost no real contact with copper on your skin.

Every piece in our collection is 100% pure copper all the way through. No plating, no base metal, no coating. The difference between solid copper and plated copper against the skin is significant, and most people notice it.

The other factor is consistency: pure copper is made to be worn every day, not now and then. Wear it every day for a month before you decide.

How do I care for my jewellery?

You can read my full guide to caring for copper by clicking here.

Does copper really do anything?

I've been asked this question for 40 years. Here is what I know:

Copper is an essential mineral that the human body genuinely needs, and wearing it against the skin is a practice that predates modern medicine by several thousand years.

I have never made promises to anyone. What I can tell you is that the people who came to me at 55, 60, 65 come back, year after year, decade after decade, without my ever having to explain why.

Whether you call it a placebo effect or not, the people who wear my copper have noticed something they want to keep noticing. That's all I have ever needed to know.

Is there any scientific proof?

Formal clinical studies have produced mixed results, and I won't pretend otherwise.

What I can say is this: copper has been worn against human skin for more than 3,000 years, in virtually every civilisation on earth. Roman soldiers. Ayurvedic healers. Native American craftspeople. Generations of women who passed it to their daughters, who passed it to theirs.

They weren't running double blind trials. They wore what their grandmothers wore.

My customers aren't scientists either: they are simply people who tried everything else first.

Can I wear it in water or in the shower?

Yes, you can.

Pure copper is naturally resilient: it has been worn by fishermen, farmers and workers in all weathers and all waters for centuries.

A few things are worth knowing though:

  • Salt water and chlorine speed up patina formation: your piece will darken and age faster than with dry wear.
  • That is not damage. It is simply copper reacting to its environment, the way real metal does.
  • Prolonged or repeated exposure to chlorinated pools can, over time, change the surface finish.

If you would rather keep the original shine, rinse the piece in fresh water after swimming and pat it dry. Otherwise, wear it freely. It is made to be lived in, not put away.

Isn't it just an overpriced piece of metal?

Copper is a common metal, yes.

What you are paying for is 100% pure material, worked by hand, one piece at a time, and a standard we have never compromised on.

We kept full control over every piece in this collection because we refused to cut corners on quality to make volume. No mass production. No plating. No coating.

Every piece is shaped, engraved and finished by hand. When they are gone, there will be no more.

You can buy a copper plated bracelet for a few pounds anywhere. This is something else.
